Architecture

Much of central Lisbon was rebuilt after the 1755 earthquake, and the Pombaline buildings of Baixa and Chiado still define its proportions. On the hills, palacetes and nineteenth-century apartment buildings carry tiled façades, wrought-iron balconies, stucco ceilings and wide pine or oak floors.

Many have been restored as single apartments or divided into a few large residences, often with a new penthouse or roof terrace above.

Light

Lisbon's light is famously clear, and the river acts as a reflector, lifting the light into south-facing rooms. Streets are narrow, so lower floors can be dark while top floors are bright for most of the day.

We plan each apartment by orientation: river-facing rooms in the softer hours, and roof terraces at twilight, when the city lights come on across the hills.

Practical notes

Parking and loading are difficult in the historic centre, and some buildings have small lifts or none. We ask in advance about access, building rules and the condominium's permission for roof areas.

Central Lisbon lies close to the airport and within controlled airspace, so drone work in the city is limited and, where possible, needs specific permission.
